This Poem Is So Deep

This poem is so deep that
Your mind will hemorrhage from your head
And steam out
And float up
Like the escaping soul of a flatlining patient.

Only your mind will stop at the ceiling
And turn and look back at you
And you will see yourself reading this
As if from a surveillance camera

You examine yourself sitting there,
Staring blankly at a computer
In the corner of a messy room.
It is so still and quiet, you notice.
So you sigh and see yourself sigh
And you slap your face and see yourself slap your face
What is this person doing? you ask
Where is everyone?
You see a person as detached from the world
As you are from yourself at this moment.

But you know that person down there
The one reading and feeling his cheek
The one whose problems are the same as your own.
And even though what you see seems without soul,
He is still you, connected forever.

Just like those people you see eating alone,
Chewing slowly and reading a book,
Who pause to look elsewhere
And happen to catch your eyes looking elsewhere,
As you too eat alone.
